FIRE SAFety
By Jeanne Renaudin

"All of us in Wakonda know how hazardous fires are. After January's incident, people are frantic to fire proof their homes. Here are some ways to make your home safer.

  1. Throw out your Christmas trees. Clay county emergency services say that dried out holiday decorations, (wreaths, and Christmas trees) are among the top ten causes of fires in the winter months. When you combine dried out greenery with Christmas lights, the results can be deadly. So emergency services suggest that no one keep a tree or wreath for longer that 1 month. Also be sure that lights and extension cords are in good working condition with no frayed wires.
  1. You might find this surprising, but the # 2 cause of house fires is due to clothes dryer malfunction. Be

sure that you clean your lint trap every time to turn on your dryer. Also be looking for any recalls that state your dryer is no longer safe.

  1. A young child's curiosity is the third most popular cause of house fires. Often parents don't think it is necessary to educate their child until they are seven or eight. But the truth is, three fourths of these fires are cause by children who haven't even turned six. Start young with your children. Store lighters, matches and burning candles where they are unable to reach.

4.     Something that a lot of people don't think about when they change a light bulb is whether or not the replacement is the right wattage for fixture. Somewhere near the socket, a label is engraved to tell you how powerful the bulb is supposed to be. A bulb of too

high wattage may lead to fire through overheating. Keep all lamps away from curtains, and fabrics. Some of them become very hot and can cause a fire hazard.
5.      Space heaters are also a leading cause of house fires. They are hazardous because of the tremendous amount of heat that they supply. Often times, home owners plug too much into an electrical socket, or plug space heaters into surge protectors. This is a huge mistake. It can cause an electrical overload, which can cause sparks
